In a few hours, my son will be graduating from high school. It is only fitting that I share with you a letter we were asked to compose for our children. They were meant as a surprise during their retreat program. Here it goes:

Dear Kuya (it’s how we call our elder brothers),

Time flew so fast. I remembered like it was only yesterday when we had you. You were my first born and it was a while before you had a sibling. So many memories… I miss those times when it was still just you and you were so innocent and full of questions. You never ran out of questions and I ran out of answers. Your thirst for knowledge is what brought you to where you are now.

My heart is bursting with joy because I raised a good man. I may not tell you often but I’m so proud of what you’ve become. I’m even more proud when people tell me that you are a good son who’s kind and so compassionate. Daddy and I are so blessed to have you. Dey-Dey was so proud of you as well as Mama Fe and Tita Yam.

I hope you do not feel you are loved less than your siblings. You are all equal in our eyes. You all give us so much joy and pride. Your siblings are even prouder that you are their brother. They look up to you. They have a wonder in their voice when they talk about your accomplishments.

As you are about to embark on your new journey, carry with you our love and support. We’ll always be by your side to support you with all of your dreams. I’m confident that you will accomplish all that you aspire for.

Good luck Kuya! And again CONGRATULATIONS on your accomplishments.

I love you!

Your ever dearest mom
